Day 21 - Carthage and onward.

We awoke to continued light rain and found that our camp chairs and all of our towels and one of our camp gear boxes were soaking wet. We ate breakfast and loaded the van. Eventually we got underway and went to Carthage. The wet had us a little discouraged and we were feeling a long way from home.

Our visit to Carthage cheered us up. I was expecting to feel more of a mourning feeling, but was suprised by the feeling of calm that prevailed. It was strangly calming to sit in the very room where the prophet and his brother were killed and to stand on the spot below the window where Joseph fell.

We then headed for Omaha and Winter Quarters. We were not looking forward to camping with our wet gear and both Tresa and I were feeling done. So, as we approached Omaha we determined to drive as far as we felt safe and to find a hotel for the night. We ended up in North Platte and found a fine, cheap hotel suite (with a full breakfast.) We felt blessed and happy to have gotten far enough that we could make it home the next day.

We traveled 671.5 miles and paid $3.299 for gas.
